When To See Doctor For Hemorrhoid?

If your hemorrhoids go untreated too long they will get more painful and possibly infected. If your  hemorrhoids are untreated, they will begin bleeding and the pain will increase.

Another thing that can happen is that hemorrhoids can turn hard. The bulging part of the vein that emerges externally can become strangled and the blood will dry up and you will have a small sac of dried blood on your anus. It will feel hard and can become uncomfortable. These are times when you need to see a doctor. Once your hemorrhoids are infected and bleeding, it becomes very difficult to treat them yourself with over the counter medications.

Feel Embarrassed?

People put off this visit to the doctor often out of embarrassment. They don’t like talking about that area of the body and they certainly don’t feel comfortable with having their anal area examined.

The best thing to do is see your family doctor. For one thing your family doctor knows you and your medical history so might have some insight into what caused your distress to begin with.

The types of information that doctors typically want to know about you, if your health issue is hemorrhoids, include:

What you eat and how often.

Whether you exercise and if so, the type and frequency of exercising.

Physical Examination

Some doctors may be able to go forward from here and not require a physical examination of your hemorrhoids.

The doctor may give you a prescription for a painkiller, an anti-inflammatory, and/or a vasoconstrictor. A vasoconstrictor shrinks blood vessels which includes your swollen hemorrhoids. to get smaller, and so will target your hemorrhoids.

Now here is what you might really want to know: What if you have to have an examination?

The first answer is that you might have your examination right there in the doctor’s office. That depends on whether your doctor does such examinations or whether he or she will refer you to a proctologist. Proctologists specialize in the colon, rectum and anus.

Procedure

This is how the examination takes place. You will be given a place to change from your regular clothes into a hospital gown. When you are ready, you lie face down on an examining table and you will be further covered with a sheet so that only the area to be examined is exposed.

The doctor will likely palpitate the area which simply means that the doctor will gently feel the hemorrhoids in case there are lumps or fissures.

If your hemorrhoids are internal, the doctor can use an anoscope. This is a small tube with a window where the doctor can see the insides of your bowel. It is just long enough to view the immediate inside of your bowel.

The whole procedure just takes a few minutes. When the examination is over, you will be left to get dressed and return to the doctor’s office.

There are two options that the doctor can offer you and the choice depends on the condition of yoru hemorrhoids. If they are not too badly inflamed and swollen, you will be treated with medication and the doctor will suggest diet and exercises changes. Sometimes the option will be surgery.
