Preparation H® Suppositories Review

Preparation H® Suppositories are well known and appreciated solutions to hemorrhoidal symptoms. The suppositories do provide fast soothing relief from anal swelling, burning, itching and discomfort.

Preparation H® Suppositories are ideal for an effective nighttime reprieve from the pain of irritated hemorrhoidal tissue. The suppositories contain cocoa butter and shark liver oil as protectants and Phenylephrine HCl as a vasoconstrictor.

While it may appear obvious to most of us, it is worth mentioning that these suppositories are for rectal use only. If they happen to be swallowed, get medical help immediately or contact a Poison Control Center right away. Be particularly careful around children as the suppositories might look like something edible to a child.

How Does It Work?

Preparation H® Suppositories relieve itching, burning and discomfort caused by hemorrhoids, shrinks hemorrhoidal tissue, temporarily coats the anal area which provides relief of anorectal discomforts, and temporarily protects the inflamed, irritated anal area so that bowel movements are less painful.

Direction Of Use

To use suppositories, insert it into the rectum for a maximum of four times daily. The recommended times are at bedtime, in the morning and after each bowel movement. Be sure to clean the anal area before insertion.

The gentlest way of cleaning the area is by patting the area with a cleansing wipe. Then dry the area by patting with a tissue or a soft cloth. Detach a suppository from the strip and remove the foil wrapper.

With the rounded end pointing up, use a fingernail to separate the foil tabs at the end marked "peel down."

Slowly peel the foil from the suppository by pulling the tabs slowly down the sides. Remove the suppository from the foil and insert it in the rectum, rounded tip up.

There are many good easy ways to insert a suppository is while standing, sitting or lying down. In the standing position, put one leg up on a chair for easier access.  You can sit on the toilet with your legs spread apart. Lie down on one side and bend one knee up towards your chest. These positions make inserting the suppository very easy. The suppositories melt once they are inside and the liquid is then easily absorbed into the affected tissue.

Be Cautious

There are some warnings in addition to not ingesting the suppository. Check with a doctor for using on children under 12 years of age.

Also check with a doctor if you have high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, or trouble urinating due to an enlargement of the prostate gland. Also check if you are taking a prescription drug for high blood pressure or depression.

Do not exceed the recommended daily dosage. If you start bleeding or your hemorrhoids get worse, check with a doctor. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a health professional about using suppositories.
