Hemorrhoids happen when the blood vessels in the anal canal and anus swell up, stretching the tissues and skin around the vessels. These are varicose veins of the rectum. The basic cause is straining the area and this is usually the result of constipation or other problems with the colon, intestine, or alimentary canal that runs from the mouth to the anus.
Repeated constipation can strain the blood vessels at the end of the alimentary canal and sometimes push the bulging veins to the outside of the anus. If the constipation is hard enough and lasts long enough, the tissues can crack and bleed and even become infected.
The best way to avoid hemorrhoids is to develop lifestyle habits that reduce the pressure and stretching and damage to the anal canal. It begins with keeping the bowels operating smoothly. There are two factors in this.
• One is water (about 64 ounces a day) to keep the entire body functioning.
• The other is fiber to keep the alimentary canal from getting clogged.
People need somewhere between 25 to 30 grams of dietary fiber every day. If possible, a daily walk helps the body to keep pumping along and the muscles to keep the system moving along. As long as the bowels keep moving good fibrous stools out of your system, there should not be too much internal pressure on the bowels.
But when you consider how hard constipated stools are and how delicate your anal canal tissues are, you can figure the results over time. The tissue will become scratched and bleed, the veins will swell, and over time, the swollen hemorrhoids will start bulging out and the hemorrhoidal problem will be well underway.
